Bringing a Rescue Dog Home
One of the most important days of your rescue dog’s life is the day he comes home with you. This may usually be as an eight-week-old puppy, but in certain circumstances this could be an older rescue dog.
I personally think that there is much, much more preparation needed when you are rescuing a dog. In some situations, you may not know the dogs history, you may not know why it was in a shelter, how it behaves or if it has any long lasting issues. You may just know that as soon as you saw its little doe eyes and felt it’s wet nose on your cheek that it was coming home with you.
You need to get your new best friend back to his forever home. Some people find that getting made to measure crates in the rear of their car are a fantastic addition and are also great for the safety of your dog while travelling. Tuffies makes made to measure dog beds to fit all sizes and types of cages as shown in the photo below.
Once your new dog is home you need to access the sleep situation. If you rescued him from a shelter he may be used to sleeping on his own bespoke dog bed in a crate during the night? This may also be a good idea if you don’t know for sure the dogs’ history. He may be slightly destructive and pick things up to chew through the night? But sometimes dogs just prefer to have their own little space that they can call their own and just feel safe and secure in a crate.
Your new dog could also suffer from separation anxiety in which case you may both feel better if he sleeps at your bedside in a new nest dog bed. These are great as they have supportive sides that exclude any draughts. They also help your dog to feel safe and secure and fantastic when they are extremely tired but still want to know what’s going on around them as they can use the sides as a head rest without them losing shape or going flat.
Once your new addition has settled in and you are in a routine it’s time to get out and explore your new surroundings. Get your hiking boots on grab the dogs lead and head for the hills! Spend time getting to know each other and really start to bond. This can lead to some great adventures until you find out your fast friend has a fascination for peat bogs!
This may seem like a great plan at the time until you get them home. This is when you find out that the best purchase you made was the wipe clean dog bed. They can jump on it rumble about make it all smelly and muddy and all you need to do it wipe it down with hot soapy water and its like brand new!
So your all kitted out. All thats’s left to do is enjoy the rest of your lives together.
