Large Breeds of Dogs Need Special Care.
Very large dog breeds are: the Mastiff breeds, St Bernards, Leonbergers, Great Danes and large German Shepherds. These dogs are in a whole different category to average dogs when it comes to looking after their joints. One characteristic is also, unfortunately, that they do not usually live as long as smaller dog breeds. Their slightly unnatural large weight takes a toll on their bodies and they absolutely need care all round. It is difficult to understate how they are prone to joint problems later in life. Hence, a good dog bed right through their life time, right from the start, is essential.
Support and Warmth is Essential.
Unfortunately many dog beds look great in the picture, but inside them there is just fluffy wadding. With the weight of any large dog, the fluff is quickly compressed to a hard mat. This gives absolutely no support or insulation from the cold floor. The dog might look like he is sinking in to the bed, but he is essentially lying on the floor itself. When dogs lie down (not on their side), they put very hard pressure on their elbows. Having his elbows essentially on the hard floor will give calluses and joint problems in later lifer.
Get a Great Bed that you can Trust.
To be certain that your dog is well supported and comfortable, choose a dog bed with a mattress inside it. A futon mattress made from inert wadding compressed forms a great, safe and orthopaedic bed solution. We would not recommend things like memory foam mattresses. Have you ever taken delivery of a memory foam mattress? As you unwrap it, it STINKS of chemicals. These waft off after a few months, but I would not ask my dog, with his super sensitive nose to sleep on one. To be honest, dog beds would not come under the same scrutiny in terms of chemicals as human beds. The safest is to use wool or hollow fibre. The latter is so easy to use and the wool obviously tends to smell of sheep, but at least it is natural.
