Here are a few tricks that can turn your dog photos in to great dog photos.
Biggest and most Common Mistakes.
Height: The most common mistake dog parents make when photographing their dog is to take the photo from their own height. If your dog is looking at you, you tend to get a large nose and a small body. The whole dog gets out of proportion. To get a good photo of your dog, get down at their level. Preferably at a distance of a couple of meters. That way, the dog shows his best proportions in the photo and you don't tempt him to stick his nose in to the camera.
Light: You need enough light to take a photo so it is not too grainy. If your dog is still, your camera (or the one on your phone) doesn't need a huge amount of light as you will not get blurred movements. If you are taking photos of a dog in movement, you need more light.
You can also use light in an artistic way where you use light from a window as it highlights part of your dog's coat. This can give a great effect.
Attention.
If you can get your dog to look at something else, not you, you will be able to show him off in a better way. Perhaps get another person to stand beside you and catch the dogs attention. that way you get a much better look of his face with eyes and ears. The other thing is that if you call your dog's attention, he might start to move towards you, which is then ruining the photo opportunity, but his face will be different too. If you are "the boss", he is likely to have his ears down in submissive position and it is again not great for a good photograph. You want him with his ears up at an angle so you get an engaged dog.
Dogs in Dog Beds.
Here at Tuffies Dog Beds we take a lot of dog photos when various dogs model our beds. It can be tricky to take many photos in succession and ask the dogs to look "relaxed" for just a couple of minutes before they need to move on to the next bed. Some dogs get stressed and it shows in the photos. A panting dog is not a relaxed dog. Some dogs simply can't do it.
Testimonial Photos.
