The most Important equipment is still the Dog Bed.
Whatever the weather and snowy walks, the dog bed at home or in the car is still the most important dog equipment. After a long, cold walk your dog will always need to sleep for hours and it is crucial that he has a good dog bed. When dogs get older their joints will need more care, so an orthopaedic mattress dog bed will be important. On such a bed he can be warm and supported, keeping him healthy for many more years.
Dog Beds in the Home.
By all means place the dog bed beside the fire. Dogs love this, almost sauna-effect from getting really hot. As they can come and go from their beds your dog will just move away when he is too hot. Sometimes there is even a hint of burnt fur in the house as the dogs love the heat. The ideal scenario is to have a mattress dog bed somewhere cooler in the house where he can go and cool off. Almost like a plunge bath by the sauna. At least in the pure snow, the covers on the waterproof dog beds don’t fill up with mud. Obviously that would not be a problem, but it does save a couple of rounds of machine washing.
Dog Beds in the Car.
If you are driving far to take your dog(s) for a walk, the car dog bed is very important. It must be warm and supportive and provide perfect insulation from the car floor/boot. But what happens when it is wet and cold is that the dog beds also get wet when the dog jumps in. What I tend to do is to bring some dog towels. I pop the towels in on top of the dog beds before I allow the dogs to jump in. That way the towels absorb most of the wet from the fur and if you are going to be on the road a while, you can take the towels away after a short time. Then your dogs sit, dry and warm and happy on the rest of the journey.
Dogs With Long, Soft Coat.
Some dogs, especially Spaniels build up balls of snow on their fur and it is NOT easy to get them off by hand. A sharp instrument can hack them to pieces sometimes, but essentially a hot shower is the answer. Some say that baby oil in the fur before you set out is good, but then you will still want to shower that off before you have him in the house.
